May 2010:
The Dalai Lama at Radio City Music Hall
The Haitian storyteller Lily Cerat and I were to have lunch on May 20th to discuss translating some of the stories in The Magic Orange Tree and Other Haitian Folktales back into Creole to offer sustenance to the Haitian children at this time. Meanwhile a good friend offered me a ticket to the Dalai Lama’s talk at Radio City Music Hall, which would be at the same time. When I asked Lily if we could change our lunch date for next week, she generously wrote back, “Enjoy the Dalai Lama and please share some of the wise words when we meet.” So thank you, Lily, for inspiring me to take a few notes. These notes are for you and for people who missed his Holiness speak. They are not always exactly what he said, but close.
I remember the last times I heard the Dalai Lama speak in 1991 and 2003 in New York City. My face, without intending to, was smiling, smiling with happiness, unavoidable happiness. On Thursday, the Dalai Lama walks on stage and everyone stands up. Many of us hold our hands in the prayer position in respect, and soon a great smile of happiness sweeps through the Hall. I look around me, everyone I can see is smiling. His Holiness has some difficulty walking up the stairs to sit down cross-legged on a high chair. He is not young and yet his face has few wrinkles. His cheeks are pink. His eyes bright and he is relaxed, easy in himself. His ease and his happiness are contagious. He lifts Radio City Music Hall with its audience of about 5,000 people, lifts us with anticipation of the joy of being with him, and at the same time allows us to seep into ourselves.
