In July I took my eighteen year old nephew, Nathaniel Wolkstein, for a month–long trip to China for his graduation present from high school. Here are some of the highlights of our journey: the stark and elegant beauty of the people and deserts of Turfan and Dunhuang; the warmth and radiance of the hermit nuns and monasteries; the deep culture of China, the presence everywhere we traveled of Gwan Yin — the Bodhisatva who hears and attends to all suffering — and the impermanence of the clouds visiting the Yellow Mountains.
